Everything ThemeMedic does, explained

Written for shop owners — you do not need to understand Liquid to use it safely.

1. Getting started

Install ThemeMedic and open it. Pick a theme — your live theme is selected by default — and click Scan theme. The scan reads your theme files and takes a few seconds. Nothing is changed by scanning; it is a read-only operation.

Scanning is free and unlimited. You can scan any theme in your store, including drafts and backups, as often as you like.

2. What ThemeMedic looks for

FindingWhat it means
Leftover app codeSnippets, scripts or Liquid blocks that a known app added to your theme. Because they live inside your theme files, uninstalling the app does not remove them.
Broken renderA file renders a snippet that no longer exists. Shopify handles this silently, but it costs time on every page load and clutters your theme.
Dead resourceA script or stylesheet tag pointing to a URL that no longer responds. Every visitor's browser still tries to load it.
Orphaned snippetA snippet file that nothing in the theme references any more — dead weight sitting in your theme.

3. Reading a finding

Each finding opens into three plain-language parts:

You also see the affected files and the exact lines, so you can verify anything yourself in the theme editor before removing it.

ThemeMedic never removes anything on its own. You select the findings, and nothing happens until you confirm.

4. Cleaning safely

Select the findings you want gone and click Clean selected. You then choose a mode:

Layout and configuration files are protected: ThemeMedic never deletes them, even if a finding touches them — it only removes the specific lines involved.

5. Backups and restore

Before any cleanup, ThemeMedic saves a complete copy of the theme. Backups are listed in the app with their date, and Restore puts the theme back exactly as it was.

Backups are stored for as long as the app is installed and are removed automatically when you uninstall it.

6. Weekly monitoring

Turn on monitoring and give an email address. Once a week ThemeMedic re-scans your live theme and emails you only if something new appeared — a newly installed app leaving code behind, or a resource that stopped responding. No news means no email.

7. The health score

The score from 0 to 100 summarises how much dead weight your theme carries: the number of findings and the bytes they add to every page load.

ScoreMeaning
90–100Clean — nothing worth removing
70–89Good — minor leftovers
40–69Cluttered — worth a cleanup
0–39Heavy — significant dead code on every page

9. Troubleshooting

The scan found nothing

Good news — your theme is clean. This is common on new themes or stores that never removed an app. Try scanning an older theme if you have one.

A finding mentions an app I still use

Leave it selected-out. ThemeMedic warns you in that case; only remove code belonging to apps you have actually uninstalled.

I cleaned something and the store looks wrong

Open Backups and click Restore. The theme returns to its exact state before the cleanup. If you used the recommended copy mode, your live theme was never affected at all — simply keep using it.

Cleanup is unavailable

Cleanup, backups and restore are Pro features. Scanning stays free regardless.

10. Support

ThemeMedic is built and supported by MB „Liūto media" in Lithuania. Write to app@liutomedia.lt — a real person answers, usually within one business day.
